Pius IV (Medici, r. 1559 - 1565), Italian pope and patron: his arms (ff. 81a-f, 88a-v, 92a-d), inscriptions (ff. 88a-v, 90a-b); ff. 90a-b, 91a-c and Philadelphia, Rosenbach Museum and Library, 54.663 were probably excised from a Missal for Palm Sunday (A.II.9) described in a 1714 inventory of the Sistine Sacristy (Rome, Archivio di Stato, Camerale I, vol. 1560, fasc. 24, ff. 265-302, transcribed in Emilia Anna Talamo, Codices Cantorum: Miniature e Disegni nei Codici della Capella Sistina (Florence: Officine del Novecento, 1998), pp. 216-22 (p. 218) (see Wieck 2006).
Inscribed 'dritta' (f. 84b verso).
Luigi Celotti (b. 1759, d. 1843), Italian dealer: his sale, 26 May 1825, lot 79 purchased for £31 10s by Rogers (ff. 84a-c, 85a-c, 86, 87, 91a-c); and lot 80 purchased for £31 10s by Colville (ff. 83a-j, 90a-b), according to an annotated copy of the sale catalogue (Christie's Archives, cat. no. 29, 1825).
Giovanni Vendramini (b. 1769, d. 1839), Italian Stipple-engraver, active in England; consignor on behalf of Luigi Celotti (see Eze), his sale 3 May 1826, lot 21 purchased for £21 by Rogers (ff. 83a-j, 90a-b), according to an annotated copy of the sale catalogue (Christie's Archives, cat. no. 16, 1826).
William Young Ottley (b. 1771, d. 1836), writer on art and collector: his sale 11 may 1838, lot 233 purchased for £7 2s by Rogers (ff. 88a-v or 89a-q), according to an annotated Western Manuscripts departmental copy of the sale catalogue.
Samuel Rogers (b. 1763, d. 1855), poet: his sale, 28 April 1856, lots 1005 purchased for £17 17s by Boone, from the Vendramini collection according to the Rogers sale catalogue (ff. 83a-j, 90a-b); lot 1008 purchased for £21 by Boone (ff. 81a-f, 82a-e); lot 1009 purchased for £43 1s by Boone (ff. 84a-c, 85a-c, 86, 87, 91a-c); part of lot 1006 purchased for £115 10s by Boone (ff. 88a-v, 89a-q, 92a-d, 93a-g, 94a-d, 94*a-c); inscribed by Frederic Madden 'Purchased at the sale of the Pictures etc. of Samuel Rogers Esq. at Christie's 6th May 1856. /Lots 1002, 1005, 1006, 1008, 1009./' and '150 specimens F. M. ' (on mounted leaf in box 1), all of which were purchased on the 8th day of the sale, 6 May 1856, by Boone according to an annotated Western Manuscripts departmental copy of the sale catalogue.

Italian cuttings.
The present cuttings were formerly pasted into The Samuel Rogers Album and foliated as Add. 21412, ff. 36 (ff. 81a-f, 82a-e), 37 (ff. 83a-j), 38 (ff. 84a-c, 85a-c), 39 (ff. 86 and 87), 40 (ff. 88a-v), 41(ff. 89a-q), 42 (ff. 90a-b), 43 (ff. 91a-c), and 44 (ff. 92a-d, 93a-g, 94a-d, 94*a-c). In 1989 they were lifted from the album, remounted individually and stored in two boxes. To see these cuttings in the Manuscripts Reading Room order Add. 21412, ff. 35-49 [box 5] and ff. 42-50 [box 6]. To see the Samuel Rogers Album, which originally contained all the cuttings order Add. 21412, Old Covers.
