Binding Post-1600. Gold-tooled brown leather; gilt edges.
Provenance Issued by Philip II of Spain to Pedro Ruiz of Cenicero: his arms and portrait (ff. 1v-2). in Valladolid, 18 December 1625, signed by three of the Alcaldes of the Audiencia de los Hijos dalgo, viz. Alonso de Morale, Luis del Valle and Geronimo del Pueyo Araciel (f. 51v), attested by the notary; followed by a notarial certificate of publication at Cenicero, 6 January 1626 (f. 52).
Attached by cords a leaden bulla, bearing the King and the legend 'Phillippus. IIII. D. G. Castellae. Legionis. Navarrae', and on the reverse heraldic arms and the legend 'Phillippus. IIII. D. G. Castellae. Legionis. Navarrae. Granatae. Toleti. Galiciae. Hispalis. Corduvae. Murciae. Etc. Rex'.
Wellcome Historical Medical Museum: inventory no. 66498 (f. 1).
Bought by the British Museum, using the Bridgewater fund (12,000 bequeathed in 1829 by Francis Henry Egerton, 8th Earl of Bridgewater (b. 1756, d. 1829).
