The cathedral priory of St. Andrew, Rochester: added catalogue of the Rochester Library, written by Alexander in 1202, inscribed 'anno ab incarnat[i]o[n]e d[omi]ni m° cc° ii° h[oc] e[st] scrutiniu[m] lib[ra]/rii n[ost]ri', with a title, 'Librariu[m] beati Andree' (f. 2r), and, in a different hand, 'Sic ordinavit libros et sic scripsit / Alex[ander] h[uius] ecc[lesi]e quonda[m] cantor', (f. 3); ownership inscription, 'III. August[ini] de doct[ri]na xp[ist]iana. It[em] ei[us]de[m] de v[er]a / religione[e]. Item eiusde[m] de penitentia / Lib[er] de claust[r]o Roffens[i] que[m] qui inde alienav[er]it / alenat[um] celav[er]it, vel hu[n]c titulu[m] in fraude[m] dele/verit Anathema sit', with added note, 'Memoriale Humf[r]idi p[re]centor[is]', 13th century (f. 4v); included in the Rochester library catalogues of 1122/23, no. 10; and of 1202, no. 11 (see English Benedictine Libraries 1996). Thomas Wybarn, monk of Rochester: inscribed 'Tho[ma]s Wybarn orate p[ro] eo / monachus Roffen.', a note in his hand, 'Hu[n]c lib[ru]m sc[r]ipsit f[rate]r hunfrid[us] in claust[r]o Roffen[si] / quonda[m] illi[us] eccl[es]ie p[re]centor cui[us] die[m] p[ro]piciet de[us]' (f. 3v), and another note in his hand (f. 167v). Reynold Goldston, inscribed with his name 'R. Goldston' (see Royal 5 B IV), 16th century (f. 1). The Old Royal Library (the English Royal Library): Westminster inventory number 'no. 43' (f. 1), included in the inventory of books in the Upper Library at Westminster of 1542; red seal of a ship, 17th century (f. 1); Patrick Young [Junius] (b. 1584, d. 1652), librarian: notes in his hand (e.g., f. 166v); included in the 1698 catalogue of the library of St James’s Palace (see [Edward Bernard], Catalogi librorum manuscriptorum Angliae et Hiberniae (Oxford: Sheldonian, '1697', but 1698?), no. 8646). Presented to the British Museum by George II in 1757 as part of the Old Royal Library. |

Includes: a table of contents (f. 1), 'De doctrina christiana' (ff. 5-101), preceded by a diagram (f. 4) and 'Sententia de libro retractationum' (f. 4v) 'De vera religione' (ff. 102-149v), and 'Sermones de poenitentia' (sermo 351) of Augustine (ff. 150-165v), including 'De poenitentibus' (sermo 393) of Pseudo-Augustine (ff. 164-165v). Part 1 is written by two hands (Hand I wrote entries 1-19 and 24-29; Hand 2 wrote entries 20-22, 30-48, 50-116, perhaps 117, 118-20, 126-62, 168-96, 200-214, and 216-235) (see Waller 1980).
