Large foliate initials with foliate extensions, in colours and gold, for the major text divisions and feasts (ff. 32, 39v, 48v, 50v, 52v, 113, 156v, 170v, 197v, 221, 232, 281). 1 small puzzle initial in red and blue (f. 271v). Large and small initials in plain red or blue. Cadels (e.g. f. 122). F. 10v by another hand than ff. 146v, 147. |

The cathedral of St. Kylian, Würzburg, between 1443 and 1455: the calendar includes the dedication of the old church of Würzburg (26 July), in black, and the feasts of Kylian, its octave (8 and 15 July), and the dedication of the cathedral of Würzburg (24 October), all in red; several rubrics mention the cathedral, e.g. 'Incipit breviarium de omnibus que cantanda et legenda sunt in missa et in choro sancti Kyliani Wirzburgensis [sic] …' (f. 281; cf. ff. 221, 262); Backhouse 1997 has identified the arms on f. 10v as those of Gottfried von Limpurg, bishop from 1443 to 1455; the final page (f. 303v) has a mass for a bishop. Thomas Howard (b. 1585, d. 1646), 2nd earl of Arundel, 4th earl of Surrey, and 1st earl of Norfolk, art collector and politician: inscribed 'Herbipoli 9o Maij 1636 stilo veteri In legatione ad Cæs:m Ferd:m 2: virtutis Laus Actio Arundell Surrey' (f. 1). Henry Howard (b. 1628, d. 1684), 6th duke of Norfolk, presented to the Royal Society in 1667. The Royal Society, London (its ink stamp: 'Soc. Reg. Lond / ex dono HENR. HOWARD / Norfolciensis.', f. 1; its book-plate with the pencil inscription: ‘XV.1.2’, f. [v]). Purchased by the British Museum from the Royal Society of London together with 549 other Arundel manuscripts in 1831. |
