Provenance |
The Premonstratensian Abbey of St Mary and St Nicholas, Arnstein: two ownership inscriptions on f. 2 (Liber sancte Marie sactique Nycolai in Arenstein. Si quis eum prefate ecclesie abstulerit, anathem sit in a 13th-century hand); and ff. 48v-49, above the catalogue arcades (Hi sunt libri S. Marie sanctique Nicolai in Arnestein. Quicumque aliquem abstulerit, anatema sit). A 14th-century cursive hand lists eight manuscripts in the upper-left-hand corner of f. 1v, five of which titles also appear in the large library catalogue (ff. 48v-49). The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts. Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d.1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library. |
Notes |
Full digital coverage available for this manuscript: see Digitised Manuscripts at http://www.bl.uk/manuscripts. Ff. 4v, 6, 34v, 48, and 50 are blank. F. 1 contains the beginning of De laudibus, book 3: blank space has been left for an initial 'M'(erito) and the parchment is damaged by stains and wormholes. Some glosses and emendations throughout (see especially f. 32); several new 13th-century hands add titles to the library catalogues (ff. 47v-49). The arithmetical tables (ff. 50v-51) are in an earlier (?) 12th-century hand. |
