Some poems are written over coloured figures: dedicatory portrait of Louis the Pious (f. 2v), cruciform Christ (6v), angels and seraphim (9v), four Evangelist symbols and the Lamb of God (20v), and Hrabanus Maurus kneeling beneath the Cross (33v). Large foliate or zoomorphic initials with gold, silver and colours throughout book 1 (ff. 1-34); one historiated initial with two men (f. 12). Large coloured foliate or zoomorphic initials with penwork decoration throughout book 2 (ff. 35-47). Very large decorated initial 'M'(os) with interlacing foliage at the beginning of book 2 (f. 35). Red paraphs (ff. 39-39v). Faint, unpainted outline drawing (off-center) of bearded man sitting frontally with book and right hand blessing, without nimbus (f. 48). Pen-drawn decorated arcaded columns framing the later text (ff. 48v-49 and ff. 50v-51), dividing the library catalogue by author. An incomplete repetition of carminum 3 (f. 49v, as on f. 6v). Pen sketches of two birds (51v).
Dimensions in mm 425 x 330 (340/250 x 265) (ff. 1-49v, 52; text in two columns); 370 x 300 (ff. 50-51v, text and diagrams fill the page).
Official foliation ff. 52 (+ 7 paper flyleaves); f. 52 is a medieval parchment flyleaf.
Collation ff. 1-49v and f. 52 are single folios. ff. 50-51v is a bifolio inserted into the manuscript on a parchment strip.
Form Parchment codex
Binding BM/BL in-house
Provenance The Premonstratensian Abbey of St Mary and St Nicholas, Arnstein: two ownership inscriptions on f. 2 (Liber sancte Marie sactique Nycolai in Arenstein. Si quis eum prefate ecclesie abstulerit, anathem sit in a 13th-century hand); and ff. 48v-49, above the catalogue arcades (Hi sunt libri S. Marie sanctique Nicolai in Arnestein. Quicumque aliquem abstulerit, anatema sit). A 14th-century cursive hand lists eight manuscripts in the upper-left-hand corner of f. 1v, five of which titles also appear in the large library catalogue (ff. 48v-49).
The Harley Collection, formed by Robert Harley (b. 1661, d. 1724), 1st earl of Oxford and Mortimer, politician, and Edward Harley (b. 1689, d. 1741), 2nd earl of Oxford and Mortimer, book collector and patron of the arts.
Edward Harley bequeathed the library to his widow, Henrietta Cavendish, née Holles (b. 1694, d. 1755) during her lifetime and thereafter to their daughter, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck (b. 1715, d.1785), duchess of Portland; the manuscripts were sold by the Countess and the Duchess in 1753 to the nation for £10,000 (a fraction of their contemporary value) under the Act of Parliament that also established the British Museum; the Harley manuscripts form one of the foundation collections of the British Library.
Notes Full digital coverage available for this manuscript: see Digitised Manuscripts at http://www.bl.uk/manuscripts.
Ff. 4v, 6, 34v, 48, and 50 are blank. F. 1 contains the beginning of De laudibus, book 3: blank space has been left for an initial 'M'(erito) and the parchment is damaged by stains and wormholes. Some glosses and emendations throughout (see especially f. 32); several new 13th-century hands add titles to the library catalogues (ff. 47v-49). The arithmetical tables (ff. 50v-51) are in an earlier (?) 12th-century hand.
