Provenance |
Made for Alfonso II, duke of Calabria (between 1448 and 1495), and king of Naples (between 1494 and 1495): with several of his devices in the original decoration (f. 1); formerly bound with Burney 343, which has offsets of Burney 133, f. 1; Burney 343 has the ducal arms of Alfonso (f. 1). Unidentified owner: with an erased ownership(?) inscription in the lower margin of f. 1. Charles Burney (b. 1757, d. 1817), D.D., classical scholar; he was presumably responsible for separating the manuscript into two volumes. Acquired by the British Museum as part of Burney’s library from his son Charles Parr Burney in 1818. |
