Binding Post-1600. French red morocco; gilt spine; marbled endpapers; gilt edges over red and green speckling; 18th century.
Provenance Unidentified owner: with their overpainted arms, perhaps paly, gules and an uncertain tincture (f. 3), perhaps the same as in Cambridge, University Library, MS. Add. 4095 (written in Rome in 1466), by the same scribe and illuminator, and Milan, Bibl. Ambrosiana, A 243 inf., according to unpublished notes of A. C. de la Mare at the Bodleian Library.
Ludovico Maria Sforza (b. 1451, d. 1508), after he became Duke of Bari in 1479: with his arms over those of the former owner, flanked by letters spelling ‘DVX LV[DOVICO] M[ARIA] BARI’ (f. 3).
? Guillaume de Rochefort (d. 1492) and Gui de Rochefort (d. 1507), Chancellors of France: inscribed with a long note in defective Latin, apparently dated 1510 (corrected from 1540) (f. 2v), apparently written by a descendant who signs the note 'Rochefort'.
Franciscus Töpsl (b. 1711, d. 1796), Provost of the Canons Regular at Polling, in the diocese of Augsburg: his bookplate stuck to the front pastedown.
Unidentified French bookseller(?), 19th century: inscribed with notes in French, in pencil (verso of first flyleaf).
Charles Burney (b. 1757, d. 1817), D.D., classical scholar.
Acquired by the British Museum as part of Burney’s library from his son Charles Parr Burney in 1818.
