Provenance |
?The Benedictine monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña in the diocese of Burgos, perhaps copied at the command of Abbot Damian (r. c. 900 to 920), by a scribe named Gomes: on a paper flyleaf (f. 1) is a parchment paste-down with an inscription in Spanish in a hand of the 18th century, apparently a copy of the original colophon (now illegible on f. 269), which states: 'Gomes dictus Peccator sive hoc opere scribto forsan me sutract[o] ab igne Era dccccl(a).vii. vi. kal. Dec.' (919 AD) (see Watson, Catalogue, 1979). However, an inscription on f. 258v identifies the scribe as 'Endura presbyter': 'O tu, lectorsanctissime, quotiens hunc librum arripueris ad legendum, pro me tandem Endura presbyter scriptoris non cesses Dominum exorare' (see Shailor , San Pedro de Cardeña, 1979). A circular ?library stamp, perhaps belonging to an earlier owner (f. 72v). Messrs Boone, booksellers of London, bought from them by the British Museum, 12 March, 1864. |
