This paper offers key insights into how UK employers, business schools and professional bodies can work together to produce the business-ready managers and leaders of the future. It is based on a national survey of employers looking at the key attributes they look for in Business graduates, a survey of Business Schools looking at the key employability initiatives they offer, and workshops conducted between October 2013 and March 2014 with employers from businesses of all sizes and sectors, as well as academics. Key findings include:

  • 80% of employers think that graduates have an unrealistic expectation of work.
  • 89% of employers believe that embedding work experience into courses would make graduates more employable.
  • 75% of employers think that graduates should undertake professional qualifications.

It makes recommendations for all parties; and concludes that the process of producing new managers and leaders requires constant innovation and will only be achieved if employers and Business Schools work together more effectively in future.
