This watercolour is one of a series collected by Dawson Turner which record the figures of saints once painted on the screen at St Felix Church in Babingley, Norfolk. The female saint depicted here carries a golden vessel containing ointment and looks up to the Holy Spirit represented as a dove. This is probably the figure of Mary Magdalen, who brought ointment and spices to the sepulchre where Jesus lay.
St Felix ceased to operate as a church in 1850 and is now in ruins. As the inscription at the bottom of the drawing states, the screen and its panels of saints were consequently ‘broken up for firewood’. This pictorial record, probably taken the Catholic antiquary F.C. Husenbeth, was included in Dawson Turner’s extra-illustrated edition of Blomefield’s History of Norfolk (1805-10).
