This prospect of Northampton was produced for the antiquary John Bridges (1666-1724). The viewpoint is Delapré Park, near the village of Hardingstone, on the London Road south of the town centre. At left, figures who we might assume to be Bridges and an associate examine an Eleanor Cross, one of twelve stone crosses erected to commemorate the death of Queen Eleanor of Castile (1241-90) who was the first queen consort of Edward I (1239-1307). The Hardingstone Cross was begun in 1291 and still stands today.
