This report presents the outcomes of the Union Modernisation Fund (UMF) project at the Amicus section of Unite, the union formed in May 2007 as the result of the merger between Amicus and the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU). The plan was to use the two-year transition period between the two organisations to bring Amicus up to speed with the TGWU’s network of equality reps. This project aimed to:

  1. facilitate the development of 400 members of the union as new union equality reps
  2. provide a strong network of these reps
  3. ensure they have access to training
  4. gain recognition from their employer and the union
  5. develop communication tools for union modernisation in this field.

The project set out to:

  1. make any necessary adjustments to the union's admin systems to facilitate equality reps
  2. cascade awareness of the role of equality rep throughout the union’s staff and officers
  3. develop training methodology and materials for equality reps
  4. facilitate online networking.
