Energy Trends and Energy Prices statistical bulletin is produced by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) on a quarterly basis. Energy Trends includes information on energy as a whole and by individual fuels. The text and charts provide an analysis of the data in the tables.

 The main points for the second quarter of 2018:

  • Total energy production was 2.1 per cent lower than the second quarter of 2017;
  • Oil production rose by 0.4 per cent when compared to the second quarter of 2017;
  • Natural gas production was 6.7 per cent lower than the second quarter of 2017, as a result of robust volumes in 2017;
  • Gas demand was 2.7 per cent lower than the second quarter of 2017 driven by  the warner weather in the period, whilst electricity consumption was 1.0 per cent lower than in the second quarter of 2017;
  • Coal production in the second quarter of 2018 was 1.9 per cent lower than the second quarter of 2017 due to falling demand. Coal imports were 7.3 per cent lower while generators’ demand for coal fell by 18 per cent to a record low; and
  • Total primary energy consumption for energy uses fell by 1.3 per cent. However, when adjusted to take account of weather differences between the second quarter of 2017 and the second quarter of 2018, primary energy consumption fell by 1.1 per cent to a new record low.
