This is the 14th annual Christmas Retail Survey, analysing consumers' shopping trends and retailers' responses in the run up to Christmas 2008 and New Year. It finds that the majority of consumers (57%) intends to spend the same amount as they did the previous year, but anticipated spend on gifts, food and drinks to be down by 7%, spend on socialising down by 12%, with consumers planning to shop locally and more intensively, spend less on luxury goods and, for the first time in five years, take into consideration the price as a decisive factor in their shopping decisions. The research also shows 16 to 24 year olds to be least affected by the economic downturn, on-line shopping set to increase and credit to pay for Christmas to decline.
