This guide to blacklisting regulations deals specifically with the blacklisting of trade unionists, an unfair and insidious practice which involves the systematic compilation of information on individual trade unionists and their use by employers and recruiters to discriminate against those individuals because of their trade union membership or because of their involvement in trade union activity. It is a common practice for employers or employment agencies to seek references on potential recruits or otherwise vet individuals for employment. Those vetting practices should be transparent, fair and open, and they should comply with the Data Protection Act 1998.
