Description

Produced in England during the last quarter of the 12th century, this manuscript is one of only a few bilingual Psalters that survive from the early medieval period. It arranges the text of the book of Psalms in parallel columns, Latin on the left and an Old French prose translation on the right, so that the two can be read together and compared. The Psalter has been revised in several places and in one section of the manuscript, the Old French translation of the Psalms has been erased completely.

The text of the Psalms is preceded by a calendar that records significant feast and saints’ days throughout the year. The calendar includes the feast for St Thomas Becket, archbishop of Canterbury, who was canonised in 1173, showing that the manuscript must have been made after that event.

This manuscript was digitised with the support of The Polonsky Foundation.
