The second volume of an illuminated Gospel-book produced in Metz (the first is now BnF Latin 11961), this manuscript opens with a full-page portrait of St Luke, followed by the Capitula, a list of the chapters in his Gospel. The Gospel of St John is also preceded by a full-page image of the Evangelist and a gold initial with the words In principio erat Verbum (In the beginning was the Word) on a purple background in a gold and red frame, giving special emphasis to the Word of God.

At the end of the Gospel of St John is a note from the 15th century mentioning the donation of a reliquary to the Abbey of Gorze, near Metz, by Henri Tardy. By the beginning of the 18th century, both volumes had become part of the library of the abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris.
