This photograph was taken during filming in 1946 of the educational documentary Instruments of the Orchestra, for which Britten composed the music known today as The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. The photograph is preserved in the archive of the conductor and composer Muir Mathieson, who directed the film. Mathieson and his cameraman are seen aloft, with the London Symphony Orchestra below. The conductor, Malcolm Sargent, is at the bottom left.
