An illustrated text of Chapter 25 of the Lotus Sutra. Commonly known in Japanese as the Kannon-gyo, this popular sutra was often published separately and considered a separate work. It teaches that those who call upon the Bodhisattva Kannon (known in Chinese as Guanyin, and in Sanskrit as Avalokitesvara), the embodiment of compassion who ‘hears the cries of sentient beings’, are promised salvation. Printed in 1504, this is the only known copy of this edition.
