These watercolours were produced by Edward John Carlos, an antiquary whose key area of interest was medieval architecture and its preservation. Carlos published extensively on this subject, contributing pieces to the Gentleman’s Magazine when John Bowyer Nichols (1779–1863) was its editor. Reproduced here are drawings of the Chapel at St Mary’s, Guildford, the Church of St Peter and St Paul, Godalming, and the head of a knight from a monumental brass at the Church of St Mary, Stoke d’Abernon.
