This manuscript is a compendium of texts on the closely related subjects of computus, the science of calculating times and dates, and astronomy, the science of the stars. It was copied at least partly by a monk of Christ Church cathedral, Canterbury, named Salomon (fl. 1185).
As well as detailed information on the calculation of calendars and the movements of the stars, the manuscript also explains the technique of finger-counting, used to work out mathematical calculations by hand. This complex method is illustrated with a series of diagrams of hands labelled with figures at each of the finger joints.
