There is extensive evidence showing that informal care is associated with leaving employment, a reduction in hours worked and employment effects such as taking on less senior roles, disruptions to working patterns and absenteeism. There is also a Conservative manifesto commitment to introduce a week of leave for unpaid carers as a statutory entitlement.
The proposed introduction of an entitlement to Carer’s Leave aims to:
• Help support carers to balance their employment and caring responsibilities, giving them more time and space to do the other things they value, outside work; and
• Allow employers to recruit from the widest possible talent pool and make the most of human resources available to them.
