The Ecclesiastical History of the English People by the Venerable Bede (b. c. 673, d. 735), monk and scholar of Wearmouth-Jarrow near Newcastle, describes the conversion of the English people to Christianity. The work is the basis for much that we know about the early history of Britain. This copy was made in Rheims in the latter part of the ninth century. In the 12th century it had been taken to the Benedictine Abbey of Notre Dame in Lèves, near Chartres, where an inscription was added. At this time one of the original sections of Bede’s text had been lost, and a new one was copied and added, demonstrating the ongoing popularity of this work.
