An article describes the necessary skills of directors, and suggests how directors' abilities can be improved and assessed. It is suggested that company directors should adopt the ethos of traditional professions, with baseline requirements for skills and an ethical framework. Another suggestion is improved external evaluation of board member performance. The Institute of Directors is stated to be actively working to promote both of these ideas, in particular by their introduction of a “Chartered Director” qualification.
