This paper presents the results of a survey looking at how people with a learning disability spend their Disability Living Allowance (DLA) with the aim of sharing with government the importance of DLA for people with a learning disability and the beneficial impact it has on their lives. The survey responses show that DLA buys additional support for people with a learning disability not covered by the support received, if any, from social services, and DLA is an important financial resource for people with a learning disability. Mencap is concerned that such plans could dramatically reduce the money that some people with a learning disability are entitled to, significantly diminishing their quality of life. Mencap considers that steps must be taken to protect DLA for people who rely on it for the vital support they require as a result of their learning disability.
