This map was printed by the Eastern Counties Railway company (ECR), and shows existing and proposed new routes for ‘passenger traffic’ across the counties of Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk. In 1836 the ECR bid to build a railway line to connect London to Norwich via Colchester and Ipswich. The proposed line is marked on the map along with existing routes for stage coaches and postal coaches. While the company eventually won the right to build a line in July 1836, building work was slow due to financial difficulties and disputes with landowners.
