This report provides insight into the thoughts and behaviour of 18,000 employers across the UK as they make decisions about how to engage with training providers, schools, colleges and individuals in the wider skills system, to get the skills they need.
The report shows that recruitment activity has increased slightly over the past two years and the most common factor rated as critical or significant by employers looking at potential recruits is relevant work experience.
It also indicates that more employers are recognising the business benefits of work experience placements, and are starting to use placements as a recruitment tool.
However, just two fifths of employers offered some form of work placement opportunity and only a fifth engaged with schools, colleges and universities to provide work-related learning opportunities.
When they do, the vast majority do so without difficulty.
Therefore, the challenge is to build on this, encourage more businesses to work with young people and offer more opportunities for them to gain an introduction to the world of work.
While the majority of employers are training and continue to invest in meeting their skills needs, relatively few are engaging with training providers in the co-design of course content.
There is greater scope for employers to contribute to shaping the training offer and help ensure that training is more responsive to the needs of business and their workers.
Traditional apprenticeship offerings remain in manufacturing and construction, yet there is room for growth among smaller employers and in other sectors of the economy.
