This report, the second in a series of four from the Enhancing Value Taskforce of the Council for Industry and Higher Education (CIHE) (now the National Centre for Universities and Business), reviews the evidence relating to the impact of publicly funded research, especially UK university research funded by the Higher Education Funding Councils and the Research Councils. It looks at how funding has changed since 2001 and how much publicly funded research can be categorised as pure basic research, applied research or 'strategic research', which is defined as user-inspired basic research.
