This paper contributes to the developing literature on how we might explain the apparently established link between High Performance Work Systems and organizational performance. It does so by using the concept of ‘relational coordination’. Data have been collected from a large sample of branches of a large Pakistani bank. Preliminary analysis of the data suggests that relational coordination is a partial mediator of the positive relationship between employee perception of HPWS and branch-level performance. Presentation of these findings will contribute to a more in-depth interpretation of their significance.
