This document sets out how Care Quality Commission (CQC) intend to develop their approach to monitoring, regulating and inspecting community health care services.  Community health care is delivered in community settings including people's homes, care homes and nursing homes, health centres and community hospitals.  It includes health visiting services; school nursing; community rehabilitation and therapist services; specialist nursing services for people with long-term conditions and end-of-life care delivered at home. Community health care often involves multidisciplinary teams which may include a range of professionals.  CQC's initial focus will be on large organisations that are commissioned to provide a wide range of NHS services.  CQC priorities for developing their regulatory approach to this sector include:

  • Clearly defining what constitutes good quality care and introducing a ratings system.
  • Increasing the size and expertise of their inspections teams in order to visit and assess more service providers.
  • Exploring different ways of gathering and using feedback from service users and staff.

CQC is the independent regulator of all health and adult social care in England and in 2013 they consulted widely on proposed changes to their regulatory standards and processes.  The full consultation documents are available by clicking here.
