This galley proof, meaning a version of a text used for review by authors and editors, shows Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem 'The Charge of the Light Brigade' in the final stages of its composition. Tennyson changed the poem up to 20 times before it was published in the Examiner on 9 December 1854, less than two months after the events that inspired it took place at the Battle of Balaklava on 25 October. This proof contains notes in the hands of Tennyson, and reveals that at the last-minute drastic changes were still being made to the structure of the opening stanza.
