This document contains the Government's response to the consultation on the second draft of the assessment criteria for Personal Independence Payment. As a result of the comments received from disabled people and disability organisations, the Government has made a number of changes to the assessment criteria. The changes include: broadening the approach to aids and appliances to include aids that are not specially designed for use by disabled people; including supervision under Taking nutrition to take account of individuals whose health conditions or impairments put them at an increased risk of choking; changing the Bathing and grooming activity to Washing and Bathing to make it clearer and easier to understand and assess; dividing the Communicating activity into two – Communicating verbally and Reading and understanding signs, symbols and words; and making reference to specialist orientation aids such as long canes in the Planning and following a journey activity.
