Apprenticeships in Britain were once the route through which many young people developed a trade and a profession. They were one of the main routes into adulthood and a rewarding career. Such apprenticeships still exist. But, despite a recent re-emphasis on the importance of their quality, there remain far too few. Both Government and Opposition agree on the importance of improving vocational education and apprenticeships and there is growing convergence in their approaches.
