Last year over 100,000 people in England spent time in hospital for a mental health problem.

Guidance and standards from NICE ensure that those leaving hospital receive the right care and support. However, hundreds of people have reported a discharge service that is seriously lacking on many fronts.

This briefing is based on:

  • NICE guidance and standards on discharge from hospital. These include guidelines on transitions between inpatient mental health settings and community or care home settings.
  • Good practice examples.
  • Findings from an online survey of individuals’ experiences of leaving hospital.
