Letters on the Improvement of the Mind is a conduct manual by Hester Chapone, in which she sets out her ideas about how young women should educate themselves. Chapone encourages her female readers to be disciplined and methodical in their studies, recommending history in particular as the subject most likely ‘to entertain and improve at the same time … to form and strengthen your judgement’ (p. 125).
