Ma, he's making eyes at me

Description

English

This recording was made by Iona Opie in the children’s playground of Coram Fields, London, in 1974. The song records a group of girls performing Lena Zavaroni’s 1974 hit ‘Ma, He’s Making Eyes at Me’. This song won Lena the talent show Opportunity Knocks. The other children explain that the girl who can be heard singing will often stand on the bench and perform this song to ‘all the people’. The song is performed in and amongst the children’s more traditional playground songs and highlights the importance of the media in supplementing children’s singing games and songs.
