The Chartered Management Institute is the professional body for management practice in the United Kingdom. In 2012 CMI conducted a survey of 4,000 managers across a range of sectors looking at the extent and nature of management and leadership development in the UK, called The business benefits of management and leadership development. This White Paper places the findings of that research in the context of the health and social care sector. It is based on new analysis of the data from 309 respondents from the health and social care sector, plus discussions from a seminar held in April 2013 with a range of sectorexperts - including the Director of NHS Employers, the Managing Director of the NHS Leadership Academy, the Chairman of Kingston Hospital NHS Trust, and the Head of Quality & Regulations at NHS Health Education East Midlands, among others. This paper covers:

  • The need for management and leadership training in the UK health and social care sector.
  • Current practice, including the activities undertaken by different organisations.
  • The link between leadership and employee engagement.
  • Recommendations for effective investment in management leadership and development.
