The first of these black and white photographs shows the novelist J G Ballard as a student at Cambridge University, in 1950. The surreal composition, showing two images of Ballard facing each other, was created by a double exposure and presumably set up by Ballard himself.
The second photograph shows Ballard in 1960, standing in the garden at his home in Shepperton, Surrey. In the background are sheets from Project for a New Novel, the four experimental text collages that Ballard created in the 1950s.
