Portolan chart by Grazioso Benincasa

Description

Grazioso Benincasa produced an atlas of portolan charts in Venice in 1473. These charts show two navigational maps of the coat of western Africa including Cape Verde (‘Cauo Verde’), the Gambia River (‘Rio de Gamba’), Cape Roxo (‘Cauo Rosso’, coloured red) and the Bissagos Archipelago.
