Winston Levy purchased this postcard of the Empire Windrush on board ship and kept it as a souvenir of his journey. On the reverse are his notes about the vessel which he mistakenly believed to have been scuttled in World War Two. His notes record that the ship ‘Sailed from Kingston, 6 A.M. 27/5/48’. It took Levy and his twin brother almost a month to sail to Britain as the ship picked up passengers from other ports in the Caribbean, Mexico and Bermuda en route. At home Winston had worked as a clerk for Tate & Lyle; in London he found a job with the Post Office.
Winston Levy is the father of novelist Andrea Levy.
