This panel was originally created to go above a map of Berkshire that was commissioned from Hollar by the publisher John Overton. The overall composition of the sheet and the detailed contents of the map were copied from John Speed’s map of Berkshire first published in 1611. Hollar’s view of the castle, however, is quite different and far finer while the two knights of the Garter, shown from different angles, are again totally unlike the single knight shown on Speed’s map. Their format recalls the small fashion plates of women that Hollar created while in Antwerp in the 1640s. The panel seems to have been cut from the rest of the plate in the course of the early eighteenth century.
