Description

This original artwork of the map of the fictional island of San Serriffe was published in The Guardian newspaper on April Fools’ Day 1977. The San Serriffe hoax was one of the earliest 1st April (April Fools’ Day) jokes by a British newspaper.

Thought up by the journalist Philip Davies, San Serriffe was elaborately described in a seven-page supplement. As well as the map by Geoffrey Taylor, which included a key and an inset of the islands’ location in the north-western Indian Ocean, a series of articles described its culture, economy and geography.
