This is a fair manuscript copy of three pieces (1, 3, 4 and 5, bars 1-16) from Arnold Schoenberg’s Fünf Orchesterstücke, op.16.
It probably dates from 1909 or 1910, when Schoenberg had to part with the original score but wished to retain a copy for his own reference. The first piece was copied into this manuscript jointly by Schoenberg and his pupil Erwin Stein, while the remaining material is entirely in the hand of the composer.
The manuscript forms part of the Stefan Zweig Collection and was acquired for the collection after Zweig’s death by his heirs in December 1960. The Stefan Zweig Collection was donated to the British Library in 1986. A copy of piece no. 2, which previously formed part of this manuscript, is now held by the Schoenberg Center in Vienna.
Reproduced here are the pages for the third piece (fol. 7r-10r).
