This report covers the digital and creative sector across all four nations of the UK.
The UK digital and creative sector has grown rapidly in recent years. It contributes almost nine per cent of total UK GVA and employs 2.1 million people.
The greatest recruitment challenges are currently experienced by those seeking workers with digital skills.
Further growth in demand for digital content and services, in particular, is expected to drive expansion of the digital and creative sector.
The sector is expected to need 1.2 million new workers between 2012 and 2022, to both support growth and replace those leaving the sector. This is equivalent to half the current workforce.
Many of the challenges identified in this paper require sector-wide action and sector bodies have worked with employers to put in place a wide range of initiatives to address them. These include:
- Efforts to engage with young people of school age to encourage the development of digital and creative skills and promote careers in the sector;
- Engagement with educational institutions and training providers to better align the content of courses with business needs;
- Designing new apprenticeship standards.
