An article discusses corporate social responsibility in relation to small businesses. It is reported that, while small businesses often show high standards of ethical behaviour and make positive contributions to their communities, small business owners often view the formal concept of corporate social responsibility as irrelevant to them. It is suggested that small business owners should be more active in recording and communicating their CSR activities for various reasons. Firstly, formal consideration of CSR activities may offer useful contributions to business strategies. Secondly, communicating CSR activities may help win clients and improve relationships with the wider community, and improve the public image of business and entrepreneurship in general. It is argued, however, that it would be an undue burden for government to require smaller businesses to formally report their CSR activities, either in their statutory annual information filings or as a requirement to win public sector contracts.
