This is an interleaved copy of the libretto for Ethel Smyth’s opera The Wreckers annotated by the composer with revisions to the text and stage directions. This document was used for the first UK performances of the work in 1909.

Smyth was not successful in securing a performance of the work in the original French language, so it was translated into German for its first performance in Leipzig on 11 November 1906. Despite a successful premiere, Smyth was unhappy with cuts made to the opera without her consent so she withdrew the work.

The Wreckers was first performed in English at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London in 1909. The libretto shows a note dated 1931, which is associated with the Covent Garden production that year conducted by John Barbirolli.
