Successive collective members of Spare Rib regularly re-evaluated the style and format of the magazine in an effort to keep it up-to-date as the forum for the women’s liberation movement. They sought to distinguish between news and features, the former aimed to report the detail of events and issues, while features gave the scope to explore ideas in more detail, from different perspectives. The letters pages and Shortlist section provided space for readers to exchange ideas and information and to publicise events and meetings in different parts of Britain. These pages were punctuated by illustrations and cartoons to bring humour and visual interest.
