Music reviews in Spare Rib enabled readers to keep up with all the great female singers and bands of the time. This included the rise of the punk and new wave scene in the late 1970s and early 80s which gave rise to some of the most iconic female acts of the era including Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Slits and Blondie. Interviews with some of these artists provide a feminist perspective on what it’s like to be a woman in the male-dominated world of punk.
