This King's Library view of St Paul's Cathedral was published in Thomas Malton's A Picturesque Tour through the Cities of London and Westminster. One of nine views of St Paul's engraved for the publication; the main interest here is the dramatic framing of the imposing west façade of the cathedral by the terraced shops of Ludgate Hill. The towers and the dome rise high above the rooftops with numerous figures in the crowded street included to give an idea of the vast scale of the church. The dramatic sky above is finely rendered in aquatint.
