This report sets out the progress made in England during the past year against the 17 recommendations set out in ‘strengthening the commitment: the report of the UK modernising learning disability nursing review ’. These were collected under four headings: strengthening capacity; strengthening capability; strengthening quality; and strengthening the profession.

The report attempts to link the recommendations to key government policy and work being carried out by the Department of Health and other lead organisations. A positive practice example has also been linked to each recommendation to highlight development in the particular area. Next steps are also proposed, some of which are already being actioned and others that will need to be planned and consulted on. These will form the basis of the action plan for the next 12 months which will enable the Department of Health to develop and strengthen learning disabilities nursing and to improve aspects of care for people with learning disabilities, their families, and carers.
